Planning for Postpartum

Home Visiting

What is home visiting?

Home visiting is a prevention strategy used to support pregnant moms and new parents to promote infant and child health. Home visitors can be midwives, nurses, social workers, or child development strategists that come to your home to teach you skills as a new parent.

Doula Support

What is a doula?

A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. Their purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience. Doulas focus on the needs of the mother and offer mental, physical, and emotional support. Postpartum doulas assist with care after birth.

Family & Friends

Social support is important throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Research has demonstrated that there is a link between social relationships and different aspects of health and wellness. For example, perceived low social support can influence depressive symptoms during pregnancy. During pregnancy, emotional and tangible support provided by the expectant person’s family and friends is related to the expectant mother’s mental well-being.
